The only problem is that it is known to smash into walls and objects at full speed. It's not like the model from last year this one has an agitator that doubles in its mopping pad, which significantly enhances its carpet cleaning abilities. The S8 Pro Ultra also has improved suction power, allowing it to pull up fine hairs and other debris that other robotic cleaners may miss.
Like the other two Roborock models I've tried the S8 Pro Ultra has a reactive 3D obstacle avoidance and infrared technology to helps it avoid walls, furniture and other obstacles. But the S8 Pro Ultra takes things a step further by having a dual camera that can detect objects and decide whether they are an object that is a wall or a different surface. It then can alter its course in a way that is automatic and clean around the objects without missing a step.
This is the most expensive of the three models I've examined, however, it's also the most loaded with features. Its sleek, angular design is striking, and it only has three buttons that are physically accessible. The power button, which restarts the cleaning mop button, which doubles up as a child-lock, and a home-button to bring the robot to its dock. The hinged lid opens to reveal a 350ml dustbin and 200ml water tank. The water tank automatically empties and the bin automatically refills.
The only downside I've found with this model is that its VibraRise mop pad mount is not removable. It is possible to replace the mopping cloth if required, but it's a challenge to remove the mount to wash it manually. I've observed that any carpet that the robot touches will be in contact with the rough Velcro like fastener on mounts, which can cause abrasions.
The S8 Pro Ultra has a variety of smart features that include support for Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Siri. You can manage and set up these through the Roborock app, which is also home to its maps and advanced mopping settings. The app allows you to plan cleanings and monitor battery life. You'll have to go through some hoops to activate voice control on this model. It's a shame considering how well-performing it is otherwise.
